so visibly "different," there is a belief, whether true or not, that those responsible for law enforcement attempt to blame these "different-looking" people for wrong-doing, even if no wrong-doing has
occurred. This has especially been an issue when it comes to police stop and search - law enforcement in many countries (such as
the UK and the United States) have long been accused of using their stop-and-search power to "target selections of the population, especially ethnic minorities" (Waddington et al, 2004; p. 889).
This, in turn, has led to issues of racial stereotyping which, in turn, has led to a variety of social science research in the field.
In their article entitled "In Proportion: Race and Police Stop and Search," authors Waddington, Stenson and Don dont really offer anything new to this particular area. Rather, the
goal of the authors research is to replicate 2000 research from the United Kingdoms Home Office that provided a profile of available population in public places that were stopped and
searched (Miller and MVA). The Miller/MVA research noted that members of racial and ethnic groups tend to increase their chances of being stopped and searched by putting themselves in public
spaces that almost guarantee such an activity (Waddington et al, 2004; p. 893). In other words, Waddington and his colleagues attempted to support Miller/MVAs assertion that stop and search tends
to depend more on people "available" in areas of high crime and high stop and search, as opposed to the racial composition and makeup. Literature Review
