But researchers (and their articles) have pointed out that there is more to decision making when it comes to products rather than price.
For example, in a recent study done about consumers and local food choices, "going local" was only a part of the reason for the
decision (though a pretty strong part) (Thilmany et al, 2008). Also at play were other factors, such as variety, type and quality, especially (Thilmany et al, 2008). In other words,
while the "locality" issue of the home-grown produce appealed, no one was going to buy it unless there was a quality factor involved (Thilmany et al, 2008). The researchers on
this study pointed out, in their article, that Lancasters model and integration of the concept of public goods also was the reason behind the purchase motivation (Thilmany et al, 2008).
This particular article adequately outlines what is likely behind the motivation of many consumers - when faced with a choice of local, quality produce, theyll buy it over store-based stuff,
regardless of price (Thilmany et al, 2008). The authors are onto something here that is quite right - price is not
always a determining factor when it comes to two goods. Emotional factors can come into play as well (i.e., something is local, something looks better and so on).
