Female sex workers, known to the rest of the population as "prostitutes" are at risk for sexually transmitted diseases because clients may not be quite so understanding about the
need for condoms. Additionally, their environment (as well as other outside factors) end up leading to them being pressured into using unprotected sex.
In their article "Structural and Environmental Barriers to Condom Use Negotiation With Clients Among Female Sex Workers: Implications for HIV-Prevention Strategies and Policy," published in the April 2009 issue
of American Journal of Public Health, researchers and authors Shannon et al attempt to investigate the relationship between condom-use negotiation with clients among female sex workers and environmental-structural factors. In
addition to the fact that the client-worker relationship is a factor, the researchers were intrigued with the types of negotiation that go on when it comes to use of condoms.
The authors furthermore point out that the criminalization crackdown of sex-for-sale has meant that female sex workers are reduced to working in isolated places (such as dark allies and other
spots), that are dangerous. These are also locations that are far from any health or social support services. The authors felt this study was important to support the growing demand
