one hand, no one wants to deny the attraction of America as the "land of opportunity," where a poor immigrant from Mexico can earn more simply washing dishes at a wage below minimum wage than he or she ever has before. But on the flip side, there is resentment that many of the illegal immigrants, thanks to some plans made by President George W. Bush, are granted legal status in many areas, such as granting temporary visas to undocumented workers. In the New York Times article "The Nation: A New Order: Imagining Life without Illegal Immigrants" (which ran January 11, 2004), this issue is further scrutinized on a few levels. The main reason for supporting these undocumented aliens, note supporters, is that these immigrants are the people who take the bottom-of-the-barrel jobs, the ones that the main part of the American workforce wouldnt even touch, such as crop picking, baby-sitting, maid services, dish washing and so on. Without such illegal immigrants, note the supporters, nothing would get done and the economy would falter. On the surface, this could seem to be true - according to the article (which quoted statistics from the Pew Hispanic Center), during 2001, the "unauthorized" labor force in the U.S. totaled 5.3 million workers. Out of this were 700,000 restaurant workers, 250,000 household employees and 620,000 construction workers; as well as 1.2 million of the 2.5 million wage-earning farm workers. Furthermore, this is labor that works well below minimum wage - while this has certain groups up in arms, it does save people some money.
