But in addition to dealing with a different set of cultures, ideals and ways of doing business, Western business men and women are finding the logistics in China can also provide a challenge. In his January 2008 article entitled "China Logistics: Anything but Business as Usual," writer Patrick Burnson says supply chains and logistic parameters in China are very convoluted, requiring different customization with several logistics partners. Red tape and unacceptable manufacturing practices are problems that many shippers tend to encounter when it comes to getting goods into China. The main challenge with China, Burnson notes, is that everything about it is multi-layered, from government to methods of doing business. Something else to deal with is an internal culture that is vastly different from that of the Wests. Burnson interviewed shipping executives from many U.S. companies for his article, and these executives came up with some good advice. One piece of advice is to keep the system simple -- instead of having third-party logistics providers involved, business is handled by forwarders or carriers. Other experts recommend having a partner who is either a Chinese businessman or someone familiar with the system. "Your partners can tell you which airports to avoid, or whether to ship by ocean or all-water route," comments Brigitte Smith, transportation and logistics analyst for Trimble Navigation of Dayton, OH. One expert suggests going through Taiwan to find a business partner.
