Fields. The Greeks honored their departed and as such made delicate and intricate grave reliefs. One such relief, dated at 400bc still exists today and is on display at the
Getty Museum. This relief is made of marble and stands approximately forty inches high and seventeen inches wide(Getty Museum, 2003). The use of marble has made this memorial a
lasting one, having survived the ages quite intact. The portraits on the relief, contrary to popular conception, are not of the persons entombed in the grave. Rather, the relief is
a rather traditional one for the time, it is stated(Getty Museum, 2003). Philoxenos and his wife Philomene are shown shaking hands, perhaps in final farewell, perhaps as a promise
of reunion. The exact nature of the handshake still has scholars debating over the significance. Though the stone today is a rather drab brown color, it is thought have been
originally painted with other details. Comparative evidence is just that: comparative. It can allow one, one might state, to gain some insight into what might have
been believed by the community, but when the final analysis is done, only factual evidences, such as writing and actual depictions should be used to stipulate what one culture believed
