an all inclusive term. Now, of course, several decades removed from the grandeur of our own philosophies, the whole concept of diversity has taken a nose dive. In fact, women
tend to be at a distinct disadvantage in respect to the practice of multiculturalism. Susan Okin, utilizing the three forms of persuasion, ethos, pathos and logos, spells out a compelling
argument supporting her claim that multiculturalism places women at a distinct disadvantage and is, in fact, harmful to equal rights for women. Aristotle coined the terms: ethos, pathos and logos
and identified them as the primary elements in a good persuasive argument. Ms. Okins article demonstrates all three elements in a variety of ways. In her opening statements, Ms. Okin
utilizes current data and statistics to address the current policies in regard to multiculturalism and why it has been espoused by every organization known to mankind. She says, "What should
be done when the claims of minority cultures or religions clash with the norm of gender equality that is at least formally endorsed by liberal states (however much they continue
to violate it in their practice)?"(Okin 1999). The mention of various countries and the way in which they have embraced multiculturalism and the problems that they have experienced as a
direct result are both convincing and persuasive to the reader. The logos utilized in these statements paves the way for a reinforcement of her position utilizing pathos. Pathos is the
form of persuasion based on emotion. Okin plays on the emotions of the readers as she gives the example of the young Muslim women in Paris, France. Many feminists fought
