The Argentine currency, funded by the IMF and pegged to the U.S. dollar, lost value. The country was on the verge of debt default, and the economy ended up in
a deep depression (Anonymous, 2003). At the end of 2002, experts predicted that the Argentine GDP would grow at only two percent,
with that countrys inflation running between 20 and 25 percent (Anonymous, 2003). When it came to doing business with Latin America, Argentina wasnt exactly at the top of any countrys
list. There was a reason for this - until last year, dollars were transferred into pesos at different rates (depending on whether
the money was being deposited or used as a loan), creditors were unable to collect on debts and the government was in constant battle with the supreme court - this
all led to laws that were deemed unconstitutional on a fairly regular basis (Solomon, 2003). Added to the whole situation was the
concept of social unrest - during one month in December, the government congratulated itself because only 847 protests had been held on the city streets of Buenos Aires; and this
was considered an all-time low (Solomon, 2003). While the Argentine economy continued to shrink, so did consumer confidence in both the economy and the government.
But what about now? Has there been improvement in the Argentine economy? Can Argentina reach its former glory (that it had during the early 1900s) and become
a country to be reckoned with on the global stage? At first glance, it could be said that Argentina is probably on its way to doing just that.
