Apple would be THE different product from the standard, boring PC clone. Since its launch in the mid-1970s, Apple has pursued the product differentiation strategy (if were examining one
of Porters Generic Strategies) by proving itself as unique and different, thus hoping people will buy, based on the differences. But what
Apple may not have counted on in its earlier years was that fact that its "unique" graphical interface would eventually be replicated by Microsofts DOS system, meaning graphic designers would
find easy-to-use graphics and more power on PCs. Apple also may not have counted on the fact that PC manufacturers like IBM would be more than happy to license their
technology - and their parts - to others such as Compaq and Dell Computers, thus grabbing more market share (and sales) by introducing essentially the same product, but at a
lower cost. Basically, with the personal computer industry, we have the story of Apples product differential versus that of the price differentiation (through
the other PC makers). Apple has managed to hold its own through this strategy, except for speed bumps and ill-time decisions in the early-to-mid 1990s. But can Apple keep
this up? In this paper, well provide a SWOT analysis of the computer industry overall, then examine Apples strategy as it pertains to
