the personal computer into a necessity, rather than a luxury, is Apple Inc., run by founder and CEO Steve Jobs. Yet less than
40 years ago, computers were those big things in basements that huge companies had; and they were only good for difficult mathematic calculations. There were "home computers," consisting of computer
kits that users could build themselves. But Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Apple Inc. came along to change that. Wozniak, in his
article "Homebrew and how the Apple came to be" says the first computers, Apple I and Apple II (which came out in the late 1970s), were hobby computers, rather than
a product to be sold. But from the start, Jobs strategy was to make the device user-friendly and fun to use (Wozniak). This has been a strategy that has kept
Apple in the market for a number of years. This is not to say, however, that Apple Inc. has dominated throughout its
35-year run. Though Apple II was easy to use, it was soon swamped by IBMs personal computers, which were a lot less expensive. Following a flawed project called the "Lisa,"
Apple came up with the Macintosh - again, focusing on aesthetics and a user-friendly interface. Even more important was the Macintosh was introduced by what is now considered a "landmark"
ad entitled "1984," during which a young woman runs into a gray meeting room packed with gray "suits" who are listening to a gray leader talking on a huge television.
