When Apple Inc. launched its first iPod in 2001, it carried a $399 price and could interface only with Macintosh computers (Levy, 2004). The point of the iPod
was less about a cool digital player as much as it was about promoting Apples other venture, iTunes (Levy, 2004). At the time of the iPods launch, earlier mp3
players "were either low-capacity toys that played the same few songs, or brick-size beasts with impenetrable controls" (Levy, 2004). The point of the iPod was to help music users better
manager their digital music purchases (hopefully from iTunes), in a device that looked cool and was easy to handle. But what seems
to be buried in the iPod hype is that of its carefully controlled lifecycle, something at which Apple excels. When it first launched its device into the market, for example,
it was careful to direct it toward only Mac users - needless to say, this market, which has an ongoing love affair with Apple Inc. and boss Steve Jobs, took
to the gadget at once. As time went on, however, Apple moved the iPod forward, first introducing an upgrade that increased the number of songs and lowered the devices price
(Levy, 2004). Then Apple released a version that would run on both Windows PCs and Macintoshes, which, in turn, increased the potential market for the product (Levy, 2004). Other versions
