Langston Hughes poem, Let America Be America, and Well Fleet Sabath, by Marge Piercy, offer such examples of prosody. Langston Hughes contribution to the literary world cannot be measured, but what can be said for certain about the writers volume of works is that it does what all good art does: it challenges the reader to greater heights than have been presently reached. This is true regardless of ones race or gender. In the end, Hughes gave voice to those whose voices had yet to be heard, and encouraged the voices of the future generations to not remain silent. Langston Hughes utilized the rhythms and cadences found in Jazz and Blues and spoke profoundly about an unfamiliar America, one that was rife with oppression and hatred for the African American and for those whose voices were unrecognized. In the structure of his poems, then, in both the stanzas and the rhyme scheme, one can feel the rhythms of the blues coming through. Notice in the following example a classic example of a call and response theme in his work. Let America be America again. Let it be the dream it used to be. Let it be the pioneer on the plain Seeking a home where he himself is free. (America never was America to me.)
