patient advocacy plays in the delivery of quality healthcare (IoM, 2011). As this suggests, there is a persistent position stated in nursing literature that nurses should be involved in advocacy
at the policy level. However, this position is in stark contrast to the reality, which is that nursing involvement in advocacy at the societal level is virtually absent (Spenceley, Reuter,
and Allen, 2006). However, when nursing assessment and the utilization of advocacy skills are too tightly focused on the individual level, there is the discernible risk of overlooking the
problems and underlying injustices that contribute to disease (Spenceley, Reuter, and Allen, 2006). A broader perspective acknowledges the relationship between societal systems and health outcomes and endeavors to remedy health-related
issues by initiating systemic change (Spenceley, Reuter, and Allen, 2006). Nursing scholars, as well as non-nursing authorities, are in agreement that being advocates for their patients is an important and
fundamental role for nurses and this position is further supported by the fact that advocacy for clients is included in all ethical codes that pertain to nursing (Hanks, 2007).
In order for nurses to be effective advocates and change agents, barriers to nursing advocacy must be addressed. The most typical attribute of these barriers is when the nurses responsibility
to the patient conflicts with the nurses duty to his or her employer (Hanks, 2007). Specifically, barriers to nursing advocacy include lack of institutional support and lack of power, as
well as deficits in nurses knowledge concerning how to go about achieving advocacy goals (Hanks, 2007). Barriers to nursing advocacy may include the threat of punishment, and a historical barrier
