In other words, an API can be general in that it refers to a set of bundled libraries; it can be specific in that it addresses a specific problem or it can be language dependent or independent. If it is language-dependent, it means the API is only available by using a specific language. If it is language-independent, it means the API is written so it can be used by several different programming languages. Companies use APIs for a variety of reasons. For example, APIs allow employees to share data and information on public files that everyone can access. Therefore, content that is created on one computer can be viewed by others in multiple locations. This is also how Facebook, Flickr and other social networking sites work, which allow users to share photos, videos, news and updates with their friends and colleagues. However, like any interface there are limitations as to what APIs can do. For example, some have noted that they can only import subscribers one at a time rather than several simultaneously (Campaign Monitor, 2010). Others have suggested that APIs can only be read in certain languages thus making it irrelevant in other specific computer languages.
