A 12 page paper discussing Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s (APEC) history and focus to determine whether it has a future. Though critics disdain APEC’s focus on the long term and lack of specific action in the present, it is long-term results – and therefore sustainability – that the group seeks. It has been able to achieve that in the past, and now issues of sustainability, environment and corporate governance are more important than ever before. These are issues well-suited to APEC’s approach to problem-solving, and they are issues that will require years to iron out. It appears that not only is APEC’s future secure, it likely will grow in significance in coming years. Bibliography lists 16 sources.

population. APEC, however, now "has a membership of 21 economic jurisdictions, a population of over 2.5 billion and a combined GDP of 19 trillion US dollars accounting for 47
percent of world trade" (About APEC, 2003). It is a large organization comprised of countries highly diverse in culture, economic status and ideology.
Critics claim that it has little real influence; proponents hold that its preservation of dialogue among member countries promotes cooperation among member countries. The latter seems to be
the most accurate assessment. The purpose here is to assess APECs likely future. APECs History Founded in 1989, from the beginning it
has been APECs primary purpose to promote free trade in the Pacific Rim and closely associated countries (About APEC, 2003). It approached gaining realization of this goal through lobbying
member countries to adjust national policies to more greatly favor international free trade in the Asia-Pacific region. This overriding goal was no small one, given the wide range of
political and religious ideologies resident in APECs member nations. APEC has added several members over the years; today its membership includes Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia,
Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam. As can be seen from APECs membership
list, its membership encompasses all of the worlds leading economies, several of its poorest and several of those that are striving to reach full economic maturity.
