A 7 page paper evaluating the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct which went into effect June 1, 2003, changing the stated ethics code for the first time in more than a decade. Compared to the ethics codes of other professional organizations, APA’s code is quite exhaustive, complete and minute in detail. Rather than resulting from any inconsistency of thought or purpose, these seemingly contradictory positions serve to provide a framework of ethical conduct that can govern academic, professional and research efforts. version of the American Psychological Associations (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct went into effect as of June 1, 2003, changing the stated ethics code for the
first time in more than a decade. Compared to the ethics codes of other professional organizations, APAs code is quite exhaustive, complete and minute in detail.
The APA appears to believe that such a lengthy code is necessary, even though it carefully distinguishes between personal conduct and that exhibited in public with
which the APA could be linked. The purpose here is to analyze and evaluate the new code of ethics. Departures from the 1992 Version
Knapp and VandeCreek (2003) review and summarize the changes adopted in 2002. These authors report that one goal of the current revision "was to reduce the potential
of the Ethics Code to be used to unnecessarily punish psychologists. In addition, the revised Ethics Code expresses greater sensitivity to the needs of cultural and linguistic minorities and students"
(Knapp and VandeCreek, 2003; p. 30). Even though there is little direct change in the Ethical Codes of 1992 and 2002, the version
that only recently went into effect seeks to focus solely on psychologists professional lives. Consistently and throughout the text of the code of conduct, the APA states that its
ethical principles apply only to psychologists professional efforts. Analysis and Evaluation On the one hand, the document holds that it does not seek
