writing consistent in design, decipherable in content, and smooth in idea transition. This previous sentence is an example of how the comma is used in APA formatting whereby nouns/noun
phrases numbering at least three are separated by a comma before each "and" or "or" in the list (Common APA and Formatting Challenges, 2007). Other formats do not require
the final comma, which makes remembering this particular format somewhat challenging if APA is not the only format the individual uses. The semicolon links two independent clauses when the
second thought is a continuation of the first but would otherwise be a run-on sentence if not divided by punctuation. A period is not always necessary to separate two
independent thoughts; semicolons serve to construct the same reading principle while telling the reader to just slow down rather than stop. Colons are used at the end of an
independent clause where additional information is needed but not necessarily in a complete sentence, such as "the schools sports department has four tournaments: football, softball, swimming and track. A
lowercase letter leads off after the colon unless a complete sentence follows it (Common APA and Formatting Challenges, 2007). Double quotes are placed at each end of directly quoted
