Company History AOL was founded in the early 1980s under a different name, that of Control Video Corp (Alsop, 1997). The aim of the company at this time was to be an online company that specialised in the provision of online gaming (Alsop, 1997). This was the time when the Commodore 64 was seen as advanced, but this company did not succeed, and then faced a reorganisation. Now the company became Quantum Computer Services and still provided online service, but this time it though it had found a better market, that of the development of online services for other companies, the most interesting of these was Commodore themselves, whom it developed a service call Q-Link (Alsop, 1997). The company started to grow and developed strategic alliance with Tandy through their Radio Shack stores where they supported a new dos based on line service provided by Quantum. Another agreement with Apple looked to give them a first mover advantages with their software designed for the ill fated Apple IIs but this was withdrawn by Apple at the last minute, this looked like a disaster, but in the end this was to be the making of AOL.
