involves a ten minute discussion, followed by weeks of anxiety on both parts. During this discussion, the boss discusses, in checklist form, the employees good points and areas for improvement.
The employee mumbles something in response about trying harder, the boss nods, both sign the form stating theyd talked, and then walk away from the process, relieved its over for
another year. The employee may even be somewhat happy, especially if the appraisal is tied to some form of raise or increased compensation. Neither employee nor boss has gotten anything
out of the review, other than a waste of time (and some nerves on the employees part and awkwardness on the boss part).
This is a shame, because when used correctly, the performance review, as part of an overall performance management system, provides a unique opportunity for an employee to obtain valuable
feedback to help her in the job, while providing the boss with an opportunity to deal with any issues that might be troubling the employee. When used properly, the annual
appraisal is more than a torture weapon for both sides; its a tool that can - and should - be used for employee improvement which, in turn, helps the organization
achieve its objectives. But how did the appraisal process move from being a potential opportunity for both sides into an event that
strikes dread in the employee while being terribly uncomfortable for the boss? How is it that we have a "rating system" in place that more batters an employees ego, rather
than a serious and thoughtful appraisal that is geared to lend a hand to employees who need it, and to tell them what theyre doing right?
