age of ten to the age of seventeen in the process of the novel and along the way learns a great deal about herself and others. In chapter five of
the book, one of the greatest lessons she will learn comes from her references to Columbus in Chains. It can be said
that any book has two plotlines running through it. First, there is the main issue, what the character wants. In Annies case, she wants to grow up and be independent
of her family. The conflict arises when she attempts independence often before she is judged to be ready for it by her mother. Secondly, the underlying issue is that of
colonization and slavery of the people by the British in Antigua. What neatly conjoins the two plotlines is the fact that Annies
view of the world becomes colored by her interaction and struggle against her mother as well as her experiences with the British colonization. She begins to apply her experiences and
assumptions to every relationship that she has. This is exampled in her relationship with Gwen and the red girl. She uses Gwen to gain the red girls friendship. Then when
she has the red girls attention, she dumps Gwen. She is always looking for the greener grass on the other side, and
once she gets to the other side the grass isnt as green and she begins to look for another patch of green grass. In other words, it becomes evident that
she has self destructive habits which will only cause her heartbreak later on. All of this seems to stem from her dysfunctional relationship with her mother.
