Ann Taylor (officially founded during the mid-1950s as a womens clothing store), is known for its classic styles that dont wear out in terms of fashion (Biesada). The Ann Taylor clothing is exclusively designed for the store itself -- with the Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor LOFT shops selling apparel, shoes and accessories (Biesada). Ann Taylor has about 740 stores in 45 states across the U.S., District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, with most of the outlets being located in malls and upscale retail centers and outlets (Biesada). Ann Taylor als has its own Web site (Biesada). Launched in Connecticut in 1954, Ann Taylor got its foothold in New England before founder Robert Liebskind sold to Garfinckel, Brooks Brothers, Miller & Rhodes which was, in turn, purchased by Allied Stores in 1981 (Biesada). Ann Taylor did well during the early 1980s, but the store itself floundered when, in 1985, Campeau Corporation made a hostile takeover of Allied, "mined Ann Taylor for cash," then sold it in 1988 for $420 to private investors (Biesada). Ann Taylor suffered from image problems under Campeau, with the new owners continuing that particular trend (Biesada). Ann Taylor went public in 1991, but continued to suffer under a high debt load and a "fuzzy fashion image" (Biesada).
