in terms of turning out first-rate students, competitive ones who will be able to compete on the global market. Todays schools, according to activist Anita Garland, arent learning centers any
more - rather, theyre places where the "pressure to look fashionable and cool outweighs any conditions for learning," as she puts it. And thats just in the "good" schools. The
"bad" schools are corrupt and filled with criminals, a place where "security guards wage a losing battle against criminals that prowl the halls."
Though Garland certainly exaggerates in some respects (she portrays some schools as armed encampments when, in fact, they arent necessarily those), she is correct when she notes that the
school systems as we know them today are not necessarily geared for learning in todays world. Rather, the system is based on an antiquated agrarian one, one that was fine
100 years ago when most of the kids were on the farm. But in todays age, one in which learning isnt necessarily a priority any more, some changes need to
be made. The question we ask here, of course, is whether Garlands are the right ones. Lets take a look at what
she recommends and see if they might work in todays system. One proposal she suggests, which many school districts have implemented, is
the wearing of uniforms. "Uniforms" as described by many districts are not necessarily "uniforms" in the overall sense of the word (unless were discussing parochial schools). Rather, this is more
of a "dress code," by which students are required to wear a certain type of pant, skirt or top to comply with regulations.
