husbandry of animals solely for the use of the compounds in their bodies. Most of the outrage that has come into play has come at the hands of PETA
or other animal rights groups. Their claims, that hyaluronan, is being harvested from roosters to smooth out human wrinkles and for use in cosmetic surgery is unethical. Since ironing out
wrinkles is not a medical necessity, their claims have made headlines and have not gone unheard. However, hyaluronan is also used in other ways. "Hyaluronan, formerly known as hyaluronic
acid, may have many more applications, researchers and doctors hope, as they search for ways to harness its potential to manipulate cells," reports Alicia Ault in her NY Times article,
"From the Head of a Rooster to a Smiling Face Near You. She goes on to report that a part of the outcry comes from the fact that the substance
found in roosters crowns was first discovered in cows eyes, but because cows eyes are more difficult to obtain or to extract the substance from, the rooster became the preferred
source. In fact, this is where the controversy comes in to play. Is it ethical to genetically manipulate the roosters so that they grow larger combs? What one has
