a phenomenal event. The disappearance can be chalked up to evolution, right? Wrong. A good deal of the planets animals have disappeared during mankinds dominance. Gandhi once said, "You can
judge a societys moral progress by the way they treat their animals", and if this is true, then what sort of statement is the United States making about itself with
its treatment of the animals? On the other side of the coin, and fueling the heated debate, however, are those who believe that mankinds position at the top of the
evolutionary scale entitles him to use and treat animals as he sees fit, and there is no need, nor any justification for setting aside large blocks of money to insure
the survival of animal species or habitat when that money could be better used for mankinds endeavors. The conclusion, of course, is that this will be an ongoing debate for
many years to come. As far as rights movements go, Animal Rights is the new kid on the block. Most generally credit Peter Singer with the beginning of the movement
with an essay that he published in the New York Times Review of books. Before this time animals had no rights. Human beings could pretty much do as they liked
with an animal provided it wasnt an endangered species. Singer stated that since the Age of Enlightenment, when modern science came onto the scene, mankind has realized that he is
no more divine than the next monkey in the tree. The notable difference being that man possessed a higher IQ and the ability to reason. With this discovery, Singer writes,
the line between a divine being and the lesser animals was erased; the boundaries were blurred(Singer 75, see also Giefer 4).The continued speciesim as he states, which is very much
