perceived immorality? Measure for Measure, by William Shakespeare, examples this in the character of Angelo. Angelo is the temporary ruler of Vienna in the play, but the power goes to
his head and he takes advantage of the situation. His character, then, serves as the conflict, which drives the play through to its satisfactory conclusion. Lord Angelo is easily the
villain in the story as he is shown to be ruthless in his application of justice and leadership. He comes to power because the Duke has supposedly had to
leave town. However, the Duke has not really gone out of town, but rather has disguised himself so that he can observe firsthand the way things really are. The
first thing that Angelo does, then, is to arrest anyone who remotely looks as if they are immoral. Angelo is determined to shut down all of the houses of ill
repute, then takes his vision to new heights. He decides that he will enforce morality among the populace by imprisoning anyone for having premarital or extramarital sex. He arrests Claudio
because he has gotten his intended pregnant before marriage. Claudio is sentenced to death by Angelo who determines that he will use Claudio as an exampled to the rest of
the sinners. We must not make a scar-crow of the Law, Setting it vp to feare the Birds of prey,
And let it keepe one shape, till custome make it Their pearch, and not their terror(Bevington/Shakespeare, Act II, sc.1, li 450). What is
