dare to face this unknown. Dr. Andrew Weil, known best for his alternative medical advice and books, offers new insight into the recesses of the human experience, the motivation behind
the current drug situations as well as suggesting alternative perspectives from other cultures. 1.One of these perspectives would be mankinds desire to alter consciousness. This, Weil argues, is why there
is a prevalence of drug misuse in the United States. This stands to reason if one stops to consider that mankind has always amended his environment to suite his needs.
Since early caveman crept out of the den he has been manipulating the environment, bending it to his will. Why, then, is it so difficult to believe that mankind would
not have a natural proclivity to do the same with his own consciousness. In past eons mankind performed great rituals, utilizing drugs
to elevate the spiritual mode and mood. During these times of trance-like states certain secrets would be revealed about his own life, and for a time, he was able to
view with perfect clarity the goal and direction of his life. This was later crushed by the onslaught of the Christian religion which stated that the Native Americans method of
worship and spirituality was heathen and evil. Dr. Weil wrote in his book, THE NATURAL MIND - An Investigation of Drugs and the Higher Consciousness: "Human beings are born with
a drive to experiment with ways of changing consciousness...The desire to alter consciousness periodically is an innate, normal drive analogous to hunger or the sexual drive"(Weil 1985). This need to
