novels which speak of her own experiences with her family which include such things as hiding from the Ku Klux Clan, experiencing segregation and prejudice first hand, suffering from a
broken home, and even rape and murder. Through it all she and others like her have stood their ground. It is to this indomitable spirit that Maya Angelou writes the
poem: And Still I Rise. Her spirit and gift of encouragement found its outlet in her written works. It would seem that in many of her poems, and there are
many to chose from, that she urges women to listen to their own hearts and their own internal rhythms, rather than dancing to the beat of someone elses drum. In
fact, much of her poetry speaks of breaking free, not only from oppression and prejudice, but also from those things that bind and keep one from achieving their lifes goals.
The first lines in And Still I Rise immediately sets the tone of the piece as one of defiance. In fact, the entire poem points out how despite the overwhelming
problems, she has found light, and life and laughter. Despite the problems she has pride and this allows her to rise above her circumstances. You may write me down
in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, Ill rise(Angelou). The feminist dimension
