These days, in the era of globalization, competition means that the multinational corporation in the UK is likely to set up shop in Anytown, USA. It also means that
U.S. companies, such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc., will return the favor, and open their own stores in the UK and elsewhere. In
this paper, well examine two trends as they pertain to Wal-Mart, Inc. With the first, well discuss the current national and international environmental issues that impact Wal-Mart when it comes
to operating both nationally and overseas. Second, well discuss other trends, such as regulatory impact and technological developments, as well as business spending.
Before we do any of this, however, well provide a brief description of how Wal-Mart went from the local department store on the main street of Bentonville, AR, to
the international giant it now is. Overview -- Wal-Mart Wal-Mart is the largest retail company in the world, operating a variety of
formats including supercenters, discount stores and neighborhood food markets (Datamonitor, 2008). At last count, the company had 971 discount stores, 2,447 supercenters, 132 neighborhood markets and 591 Sams Clubs in
the United States (Datamonitor, 2008). Internationally, the company has operations in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, the UK and China (Datamonitor, 2008).
