There is a lot about SWA that is impressive; one of the main things is that founder Herb Kelleher went against what was "popular" in the day and decided
to set up a low-cost, no-frills airline that people embraced. That out-of-the-box thinking is something hat continues to permeate the SWA culture. That, and treatment of its employees. Positive
treatment of employees means better treatment of customers, which is why SWA has such a loyal customer base. What grade would you give Southwest management for the job
it has done in crafting the companys strategy? What is it that you like or dislike about the strategy? Does Southwest have a winning strategy?
If one judges from the companys profits and lack of "churn" or employee turnover then yes, the company has a winning strategy. The strategy, which is that the
employee is always right, is an interesting one and again, it flies in the face of many companies that say the customer is always right. This is a strategy that
not many companies/customers might like as it puts the onus on employees. If employees arent the type who like to take responsibility for good and bad actions, then they dont
really belong at this company. The only problem with the strategy is this - that not all employees like the idea of being "empowered," so this may not be for
everyone. What are the key policies, procedures, operating practices, and core values underlying Southwests efforts to implement and execute its low-cost/no frills strategy?
