first schoolchild entered a classroom to begin formal education by a classroom instructor, people and theories have abounded as to what creates the "best" education. Two such theorists are Paulo
Freire and James Loewen. Though Professor Loewen, a baby-boomer born in the United States , is still living, teaching (and writing) and Preire was raised in poor circumstances during the
Great Depression in Brazil before coming to the U.S. to teach, both pedagogues are critical of the way in which education is handled. In this paper well examine the concepts
of these two pedagogues and determine how they are best applied to higher education (college). Loewens first book "Lies My Teacher Told Me"
probably says it all in terms of how he regards education, especially education about history. In his first book, Loewen analyzed a variety of history textbooks and came to some
pretty startling conclusions. In addition to being boring when taught in the classroom, having been sanitized of any character or interest, many of the facts taught in the classroom are
just plain wrong (McLaren). He points out that many history textbooks consist more of hero worship than facts (McLaren). One example he uses is Woodrow Wilson - though Wilson was
a progressive, he was also a white supremacist (McLaren). As a result, when he got to Washington, he segregated the federal cafeterias and workplaces - which is something that doesnt
always make it into the history books (McLaren). Loewen is a supporter of debate and honesty in the classroom. He doesnt, however,
necessarily support "differences of opinion," but likes the idea of all opinions being aired. In this type of situation, he points out, different perspectives can be put forward and analyzed.
