Complete a job description and job specification for a Starbucks employee. When it comes to Starbucks, the job specification is more important than the job description. For example, a
job description for a barista would include an ability to brew coffee, and to learn different menu items quickly - these are the tasks required. The job specification would require
an employee who is a "people person," who has good communication skills and who has had some experience in the food industry. Job specifications focus on knowledge, skills and abilities
to do a job properly; in other words, tools available to help fulfill the job description. What form of departmentalization should
Starbucks use? Should the form be changed in stores offering food products and lunch? Why or why not? Departmentalization refers to grouping of specific activities associated with a certain product
or service. One way of departmentalizing is through programs or tasks. Another is to departmentalize based on products. Product departmentalization would be the best bet for Starbucks, especially in stores
that offer food products and lunch. One area would involve the brewing and serving of coffee, whereas the other area would specify serving food (or preparing pre-packaged food). The reason
why departmentalization is so important is because it would help the retailers provide quicker service - there is nothing more frustrating to a customer who wants a cup of coffee
than having to wait in line while a customer in front is awaiting a made-from-scratch sandwich, or is trying to wrap several scones in a bag.
