the Gulf War, many dissenting views of the campaign became apparent. Should Bush have stopped short as per the United Nations requested? Has the legacy of the Gulf War come
back to haunt the United States? And more importantly, was George Bushs personal leadership style the appropriate one for the job? A quick recap of the Gulf War requires that
one back up and view the incidents which led up to the war. Iraq had been a country of internal conflict for many decades. When Saddam Hussein came into power
he believed that the way to rule his country was with a heavy hand. As such, then, he engaged in political purges which included execution of those whom he suspected.
He slowly began to amass an army with enough power to begin to worry his neighbors. Israel was worried enough to launch a preemptory strike intended to disable his nuclear
weapons capabilities. Iran, too, declared and waged an unsuccessful short war with Iraq, from which neither emerged any better off. Somehow encouraged by this, Saddam decided that weapons and
the military were the way to go, so he borrowed loads of money from other Arab nations. He built a massive war machine. But, Kuwait, when it lowered its oil
prices, cut the legs off of this machine. Iraq claimed that Kuwait had to be drilling diagonally across the border and tapping their reserves, though they couldnt prove it. Whether
they could prove it or not, it was enough reason to attack Kuwait. With the annexation of Kuwait, he now controlled over twenty percent of the worlds oil reserves(The Gulf
War). Not good. What was next, Bush wondered, Saudi Arabia? Economic sanctions were attempted, but did not quarantine Saddam from the human rights violations which he was continuing to perpetrate
