Lisa Sharp and Martin S. Lipsky ran in the May-June issue of Journal of American Board of Family Practitioners. The article describes research put together by the authors that determines
the accuracy of CPT coding among family physicians. The article points out that with interest in the importance of CPT coding, not enough studies (at least, at that time) had
been done on how accurately most practices were handling coding. The authors set out to do this themselves by pulling together 600 active members of the Illinois Academy of Family
Physicians and putting the practitioner and their offices staffs through rigorous coding sessions based on hypothetical patient visits and treatments. The results showed that coding errors were substantial among this
group, especially when it came to new patients. Interestingly enough, a common error for established patients tended to be undercoding, while new patients tended to have too much coding. The
paper surmised that proper directions werent getting through to the physicians staff, requiring the need for further clarification and the paper went on to list some of these methods of
clarification. The authors were pretty blunt about the limitations of the study, of which one was a 42% response rate, which might be considered skewed. The authors felt, however, that
despite the low response rate, that the sample was representative of the study, as the sample represented tended to encompass all ages and all experience levels. While the above paper
