depth, layers, and meaning to the audience or reader that experiences it. All My Sons by Arthur Miller is one such classic, while Blues for Mr. Charlie also examples this
same breadth and depth. True to Arthur Millers style, All My Sons addresses the dark side of the American Dream. The setting is postwar America and the economy is booming.
And yet, there is a darker undercurrent which runs barely beneath the surface, a darkness created by the inevitable atrocities of war. The specific charges that are leveled against
business and what it says about the American way of doing business is stark and unforgiving. Miller seems to be saying through his depiction of Joe Keller that one of
the casualties which came out of the post World War era was a loss of integrity. Joe personifies this atmosphere in that he places his immediate family above the greater
good of society at large. In Joes case, during the war he shipped defective parts to the war effort. His son was killed in the war due to equipment
defects. Kate Keller, Joes wife, has been able for all the years after the war to delude herself into believing that her son is still alive somewhere in Europe, rather
than dead, possibly because of the faulty parts which Joe knowingly allowed to leave his manufacturing plant. Blatantly, then, Miller is stating that the American way of doing business was
to make a buck at any cost. In other words, the means justified the ends. And, in the end, Miller shows that there are larger ramifications when one acts totally
out of a self-consuming and limited vision of the world. Likewise, Mart Crowleys character, Michael, must deal with his own limited vision of the world. There are several issues,
