nurses, but also conduct that is the epitome of professionalism. The first provisions of the ANA code systematically address all areas of professional nursing. Provisions 1 through 3 address the
principal obligations of nursing, which are to the patient/client. Provision 1 stipulates the nurses duty to treat patients with the compassion and respect that inherent human dignity deserves. The second
provision builds on this concept, further defining "patient" as indicating not just an individual, but whoever the client might be, that is, an individual, family, group or community. The third
provision indicates that nurses are also responsible for the providing a safe environment for the patient and this includes patient advocacy (ANA, 2005). At this point in the code,
the perspective broadens to include the context in which nursing takes place. The fourth provision states that nurses are responsible and accountable for nursing practice. This suggests that nurses should
strive toward the goal of being aware of the latest technological and medical developments in their particular nursing field, and that they remain responsible for outcomes even when they delegate
tasks. Provision 5 provides a crucial point, which is that the nurse owes the same duties to self that are offered to others, which includes the "responsibility to preserve integrity
and safety" (ANA, 2005). After all, if a nurse does not take steps to preserve her or his own safety, the nurse cannot adequately "be there" for the patient. The
sixth provision again broadens the range of nursing responsibility, indicating that nurses have an ethical duty for establishing, maintaining, and improving health care environments and conditions of employment that
