This was especially true during the rise of manufacturing in the late 19th and early 20th century -- the mass-produced products that came out of these factories were such a marvel, it didnt seem to matter if the quality wasnt good or the parts defective. But as technologies improved and more and more companies got into manufacturing, competition grew. Products had to become better. But many times, the defective products ended up out the door before it was too late to stop them. Many times as well, the defective product was considered the fault of the person or assembly line manufacturing the piece. As competition became global in nature, it also became clear that something else would have to be done to reduce defects to statistical zero in order to stay competitive. This, among other things, is what led to the rise of Total Quality Management and its distant cousin, process improvement. Once considered a somewhat exotic form of operations management, TQM and process improvement are used in many companies -- or at least are given lip service. Academic and business literature is rife with the concept, showing success story after success story of how such a thing works. But what, exactly, is process improvement? In its basic form, the process improvement model (PIM) or process improvement procedure (PIP) is a systematic and step-by-step approach to studying, analyzing and then improving processes and procedures associated with developing and/or manufacturing a companys products or services (Houston and Dockstader, 1993).
