only had he won the Electoral Vote decisively (taking 365 votes to Republican Senator John McCains 173), he also won a clear majority of 52.9% of the vote - the
first time in a long while that a president had such a positive mandate. Even as Americans were celebrating the fact that
change had finally come to America, some doubts still remained about that agent of change. Though hed been pretty much vetted throughout the campaign, overcoming controversy after controversy, questions about
Obama remain. Is he an idealist who believes he can bring change to the jaded, cynical Washington DC elite? Or is he a canny and shrewd politician whos only goal,
as the extreme right-wing fundamentalists believe, is to push us into a socialist-Marxist society? In this paper, well examine Obamas beliefs, backgrounds and journey to the presidency and determine whether
Obama is the sincere idealist or the shrewd socialist. GOALS IN OFFICE President Obamas goals can be clearly seen in his inaugural
address, which he presented on January 20, 2009. He pointed out a variety of challenges such as the economy, terrorism throughout the world, costly healthcare, overuse of energy and a
faltering education system (Obama, 2009). Though the speech was fairly broad, his goals were to start getting the economy moving, to
start moving toward more green energy, to rebuild infrastructure and "restore science to its rightful place, and wield technologys wonders to raise healthcares quality and lower its cost" (Obama, 2009).
