and enabling more flexible, agile solution delivery" (Who We Are, 2012). To simplify this definition, VMWare is a one of the pioneers in virtualization software; its the largest global
vendor providing virtualization software for server operating systems (Morningstar Equity Analysts, 2012). Virtualization software, incidentally, is software allowing a single host computer to create and run at least one (or
more) virtual environments; such software is used to emulate a computer system so a guest operating system can be run. For example, a guest operating system running Linux can be
run on a PC that might have a Microsoft Windows operating system. The more common of these systems is that of a guest iOS system (such as what one might
find in Apple Macintosh computers) running on PC systems. This type of technology allows computers and applications to "talk" to each other without a lot of problems or delays.
In recent months, the company announced it would acquire Nicira, a start-up company that is focused on software-defined networking; this is considered
an "aggressive" acquisition for VMware (Morningstar Equity Analysts, 2012). The overall industry trend is that of server consolidation (which as helped drive
the adoption of VMwares virtualization technologies) (Morningstar Equity Analysts, 2012). VMwares products help improve server utilization by allowing multiple operationg systems to run on a single server - the Morningstar
analysts like this, because such consolidation will help lead to savings in hardware, cooling, power and real estate (Morningstar Equity Analysts, 2012).
