United States. The first Cracker Barrel Old Country Store opened in Lebanon, TN in 1969; Evins, who worked with Shell Oil,
believed more gas would sell if he could combine restaurants and gas stations (Bramhall, 2009). Evins thought the concept would sell if placed along the interstate highway system.
This was in the day before the "travelers plazas" we see today that combine fast food and gasoline services. It also needs to be
remembered that in 1969, the interstate highway system was a relatively new concept. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Congress had only passed the concept less than a generation before, and
the roadways were still being built in the 1960s. Evins was able to quit the Shell Oil job in 1973 as the demand for his restaurants grew, though eventually the
gas pumps went away (Bramhall, 2009). The company went public in 1981 and some years later, restructured into a holding company called CBRL Group, as it was buying other chains
and expanding out of the southeast (Bramhall, 2009). During its years of existence, the company was the target of class action suits alleging discrimination and sexual harassment (Bramhall, 2009). Also
in the companys history was a lawsuit tied to illegal contributions made to a political action group tied to notorious former Congressman from Texas Tom Delay. In 2008, the company
