some bit of controversy over the rest of the basic doctrinal beliefs. It can be stated, then, that Judaism holds that there are certain ways in which one must order
their life, certain belief systems that must be in place, and limits to the ways in which believer and non-believer relate. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, known as the Patriarchs, are
both the physical and spiritual ancestors of Judaism. They founded the religion now known as Judaism, and their descendants are the Jewish people. It was only a few decades ago
that being a Jew was an ethnic persuasion and specifically a religion. Now, of course, being Jewish is not a race so much as it is being part of a
religious movement. Much more controversial is the manner in which one is considered Jewish. Many become Jewish through birth to a Jewish mother, and not because of the persons particular
beliefs. Though they may never embrace their Jewish heritage, they are considered Jewish for their whole lives. So, in this respect there can exist secular Jews and non-religious Jews. A
rabbi is not a priest, neither in the Jewish sense of the term nor in the Christian sense of the term. In Christian circles a priest is a person whose
job it is to perform certain sacred rituals, whereas in Judaism, the rabbi has no authority to perform rituals. Instead, Rabbis are teachers of the Jewish laws and faith.
Neusnar states that this whole belief was challenged in the twentieth century, mainly spurred on by the creation of Israel and so the whole concept of the conversion process was
