Money and the Meaning of Life. " . . . the lack of it, the need for it, the desperate difficulty of having enough of it, and the fear of
what would become of us without it." (p. 21) He began his book in this way, to point out the difference between
his own upbringing (which was money-poor) and that of his good friend (who was raised in a wealthy home, but was lackadaisical about his supposed "good fortune." "Here was a
child who had everything I could have ever dreamt of having," he writes, "but it was not what he wanted!" (p. 22).
In our society, money seems to be king. If there is any doubt, simply turn on the television to see reality shows that center around money: "Joe Millionaire," "The Apprentice"
(in which the winner is awarded a high-paying job with a major business mogul); "The Rebel Billionaire" (in which the winner of this one ends up becoming president of a
multi-billion-dollar company); "My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss" and so on. If television werent enough, there are the "get rich quick" schemes that
seem to catch on so much. Publishers Clearing House, promising riches beyond ones dreams if one is able to obtain them by purchasing enough magazines. Then there is the state
lottery. The media abounds with stories about people buying a lottery ticket, then "lucking out" by winning millions of dollars. Even more interesting is that when these people acknowledge that
