his farming family), Carter treats the scenario more like a living documentary than something hed actually lived through. Though throughout the book,
Carters love for the earth is definitely apparent. It first shows up on page 15, when he notes "my most persistent impression as a farm boy was of the earth.
There was a closeness, almost an immersion in the sand, loam and red clay that seemed natural, and constant." This is why
Carter is able to discuss sharecropping as a "way of life" rather than a harsh system that history has painted it (in fact, one of his most interesting chapters is
named "Sharecropping as a Way of Life." But sharecropping, he pointed out, was an old system, if not a natural one
- it seemed reasonable for landowners to assign a specific portion of their land to white farmers who couldnt own land but who had enough animals and equipment to produce
and gather a crop. "Good or bad fortune for owners of smaller farms would inevitably be shared by their tenants," Carter noted.
The sharecropping system successfully continued, he pointed out, once the slaves were freed, as many of them had had experience in the fields - and their former owners had too
much land to work by themselves. What happened was that these black families chose to "share" the "crop," and to take the risks in working with the land.
