holistic view of a patient; rather than simply treating the disease, health care providers are starting to look at other influencing factors.
Coreil, Bryant and Henderson introduced the concept of a causality continuum in health care, which took into account differing degrees factors impacting health. Variables/concepts with a direct influence on illness/health
are considered "proximate," while on the other end of the spectrum are the distal variables, which have a more indirect impact on health - distal variables are more background impact
than anything else (Coreil et al, 2001). Linking these two factors are the intermediate variables. Causality Continuum Model Distal Intermediate Proximate Ecological Setting Demographics Political Economy

authors point out that the further one moves away from proximate factors and toward distal factors, the more difficult it is to prevent the chain of causality.
Now that we have an understanding of the model, lets see how its applied to nursing. One
example of this was introduced by Coreil et al in 2001 when discussing breast cancer - they point out that incidence rates for breast cancer were increasing at a rate
of approximately 2% a year since 1972, and better detection and improved screening methods couldnt account for the entire increase (Coreil et al, 2001).
But on the "distal end" of the causality continuum of breast cancer, its been noted that a higher socioeconomic status (SES) seems to dovetail with an increased incidence
