knowledge must have as its objective that which is genuinely real as compared to that which is an appearance only. So how do we know that certain objects are for
real, or if they are only perceptions? In the case of an object, like, say, a pen. How does one know that a pen is a pen? Is my perception
of a pen the same as someone elses perception? According to Plato (and as it is borne out by modern science) most people do not perceive anything the same way.
While most people will have some shared perceptions, the extent, depth, and attitude toward the object are as individual as a fingerprint. In
other words, that which is real is something that is fixed and unchangeable. This can be determined by comparison to those things that are not concrete, but ideas. This type
of thinking, the student could state, however, really puts a hold on empirical thought, one would think. If one believes that knowledge is only gained through reason, then the sensory
perceptions are ignored and rejected. What led Plato to believe this is arguable, but logical. He seemed to believe that anything experienced by a sensory perception (touch, taste, smell, hearing,
or sight) was subjected to each individuals standards of judgment. Whereas concrete facts were not changeable or subject to ones individuality. So how does one remove the sensory
knowledge and utilize reason only where a pen is concerned? One might reason that, that which we call a pen has certain characteristics. The pen clicks on, and it clicks
