a back seat to mankinds inventions and as a result man walked away from his partnership with the Earth and its creatures. Richard Wilburs, The Death of a Toad, utilizes
the formal elements of diction, imagery and structure to portray this lack of respect for nature, and illustrates the cost to mankind as he embraces the industrial revolution. Many,
it can be said, longed for a return to nature simply because the reality of industrialization was less a paradise than a nightmare, and those things designed to make mans
lives easier only served to make them more complicated and stressful. This seems to be the key theme and overall tone in Richard Wilburs poem, The Toad. Nature, while still
considered the ultimate teacher, is no longer the sanctuary or retreat, but rather nature is part of the internal landscape of the mind and an object of social and political
ramifications. Wilburs poem, it can be said, embodies this premise, espousing that nature(read mans creativity and soul) are in a fight for their own survival and right to exist, and
that the simple things in life, those things that really count for more, are drown out by the roar of progress in the form of a lawn mower. The rare
