genocide, ethnic cleansing and other atrocities that cant be explained away. As of 2010, the conflict drove more than 2.7 million people
from their homes, with more refugees fleeing over the borders to neighboring African nations such as Chad (Q&A: Sudans Dafur conflict 2010). Because Chads eastern areas have a similar ethnic
make-up to Darfur, the violence has spilled over into that nation (Q&A: Sudans Dafur conflict 2010). Despite a variety of attempts to stop the violence in Darfur, it continues on.
The situation in Dafur is a tragedy, but to understand it, its a good idea to understand Sudan, as a whole. This has
been a volatile country - since its independence from Britain in the mid-1950s, the country has suffered conflicts caused by economic and social issues (Central Intelligence Agency 2012). Economically, the
country is exceedingly poor; the 2011 succession of South Sudan, the region of the country that is responsible for about three-fourths of the former Sudans total oil production, hasnt helped
economically (Central Intelligence Agency 2012). Much of the country - including Dafur - is at or below the poverty line (Central Intelligence Agency 2012).
Because of all of the inherent issues with Dafur, sending peacekeeping forces in, or condemning the leadership of Sudan as a whole isnt going to do a whole lot
