however, that the Aryan Brotherhood has been operative mainly in prisons. Also known as "the brand" or Rock (referenced to the Shamrock tattoos that AB members like in addition to
the standard Nazi cross), the Aryan Brotherhood is a highly feared gang in prison, and with good reason. Entrance into the gang is possible by murdering another inmate -- mostly
done in showers (Holthouse, 2005). According to the FBI, the white power gang has been responsible for 18% of all in-prison murders (Holthouse, 2005).
The question we ask here, however, is why does the Aryan Brotherhood concern us? Why is this organization important? Though
known for their violence and mayhem in prison, the Aryan Brotherhood has, in recent years, established criminal networks outside in cities, small towns and other areas across the United States
(Holthouse, 2005). The problem is, incarcerating members doesnt seem to work, nor does keeping the gangs leaders in solitary confinement (Holthouse, 2005).
Messages can be sent from member to member through various means, and the message is pretty much the same across the board -- the white race is supreme, and all
others must be destroyed, no matter the means (Holthouse, 2005). History Like many racially oriented organized crime groups, the Aryan Brotherhood got
its start in the Jim Crow days before the civil rights movements of the 1960s. The same could be said of prisons -- most prisons were racially segregated until the
mid-1960s (Holthouse, 2005). When desegregation occurred among the prison population, it was violent (Holthouse, 2005). Inmates ended up creating and forming groups and gangs based on color and racial lines
