businesses are in business to make money, mission and core value statements generally go beyond this motive to better appeal to consumers and employees. Smuckers, which is best known for
manufacturing and distributing jams and jellies, also has other brands in its "family" including Pillsbury, Hungry Jack and Jif. The companys mission
statement is "our purpose of bringing families together to share memorable meals and moments," while the core values are encompassed in the companys Basic Beliefs. These beliefs include categories such
as ethics, community, quality and people. But there is little focus in the core values on the customer or the shareholders. The mission statement is all right, but the core
values need some fixing. To clear up the mission statement and core values, its suggested that the mission statement include more emphasis
on products, that shareholder goals be addressed and that customers get a better reference than that already provided. Introduction Most
for-profit companies are in business, well, to make a profit. But simply stating "were in this to make money" doesnt really appeal to customers (or employees for that matter). As
a result, any business worth its salt needs to create values that go beyond a profit motive, and offer a product or service to the market that encourages people to
buy. People will buy that product because they like it, they like the company, or its something they need. The products of
J.M. Smucker Co. dont fall into that last category; few people "need" jams or jellies. But they like these products because they taste good.
