indicated there was no such thing as "separate but equal" when it came to education. It was the lawsuit that helped launch desegregation.
But the problem we run into when discussing "Brown" is the assumption that it just happened. But there is a long history behind "Brown," and it actually starts all
the way back to Colonial times, when people of color wanted the same educational opportunities as their white counterparts. And this is one of the themes explored in Klugers book
"Simple Justice." Brown didnt just happen - it was the outgrowth of decades of blacks being told they simply werent good enough to share the same educational facilities as whites.
It took many years for Brown v. Board - starting with the impassioned plea from the Black community in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts during the 18th century1. The path to
a better education for blacks was a rocky one, and it mimicked perfectly the mistreatment of the Negro race, both by the courts and by other citizens2.
The second theme that Kluger explores is that Brown was the climax - Brown meant more than simply allowing blacks and white to mingle together.
It pointed out the fact that blacks were not only getting a separate education, but a very unequal one. Nor was the inequality just found in the schoolhouse. "There were
thirty school buses for the white children. There were not for the black children," Kluger writes3. So the theme here wasnt
