Ms. OConnor is stating that mankind, unless confronted in some traumatic way is not likely to give up his mode of living for the disciplined life demanded by conversion. However, she also shows that those who do manage this trial by fire are the better for it and the reader is left with a kind of moment of truth and point of grace for herself. This moment of truth is best illustrated with two of her better-known works: A Good Man is Hard to Find and The Train. In A Good Man is Hard to Find, OConner manages to bring about the right balance of humor and tragedy, throwing in other literary elements for spice, which results in a thought provoking read. In A Good Man is Hard to Find the family is determined to take a trip to Florida for a vacation. The family includes the standard 2.5 kids and a grandmother. The story is told through the point of view of the grandmother. She is at once manipulating and controlling, insightful and superstitious. She states at the beginning of the story that if they go to Florida, where it has been rumored that there is an escaped murderer loose, they will all be killed. The family ignore her and go anyway.
